UK Regulators Begin Oversight of Critical Technology Providers

The Bank of England, Prudential Regulation Authority and Financial Conduct Authority will begin overseeing the first critical third parties on 13 July after Treasury designated four major cloud and technology providers.

The first designated providers are Amazon Web Services EMEA SARL, Google Cloud EMEA Limited, Microsoft Ireland Operations Ltd and Oracle Corporation UK Limited. The regulators said these providers support services that are widely used by financial firms, meaning a major disruption could affect multiple firms or markets at the same time.

The new oversight regime focuses on the resilience of critical services provided to the UK financial sector. It is designed to sit alongside, rather than replace, the outsourcing and operational-resilience obligations that regulated firms already have.

The FCA statement says critical third parties must manage risks to their services effectively and communicate openly with regulators and firms during major incidents. Treasury remains responsible for future designations and removals.

Why it matters

Trading platforms, brokers, market-data providers and financial infrastructure increasingly depend on a small number of large technology vendors. If one provider has an outage, execution, pricing, account access or back-office processes can be affected across several firms at once.

For traders, this is a reminder that broker due diligence is no longer only about spreads, regulation and withdrawals. Operational resilience and third-party dependencies also matter.

What to watch next

Watch how the regulators test the designated providers and whether more firms are added to the regime. Broker disclosures around outages, cloud concentration and incident response may become more important for platform comparisons.
