FINRA Launches Market Data and Investments Explorer for Retail Research
FINRA announced the launch of its Market Data and Investments Explorer, a free online research resource for retail investors. The tool combines FINRA education materials with market, product and company data. It replaces and expands on the regulator’s retired Market Data Center, according to FINRA’s 13 October release.
The Explorer includes market indexes and current-market information, data on exchange-traded and over-the-counter equities, ETFs and mutual funds, and profiles of exchange-listed companies. FINRA said company profiles include descriptions, stock prices, valuation and profitability information, recent news and SEC filings.
FINRA also updated its Risk Meter and Scam Meter. The Risk Meter asks users about circumstances and behaviours before generating a fraud-vulnerability rating and suggestions. The Scam Meter uses five scenarios to highlight common scam tactics and provide an awareness score. These tools are educational resources; they do not replace a broker’s disclosures, independent research or investment advice.
Why it matters
For self-directed traders, the launch creates a regulator-operated starting point for checking listed-company and market information alongside educational material. The inclusion of OTC-equity data is also relevant to traders researching securities that may have thinner liquidity and less familiar issuer information than exchange-listed names.
The tool does not change trading rules, order handling or broker obligations. Its practical value will depend on how current and complete its underlying data is, so traders should continue to verify price-sensitive information through their broker, exchange data and issuer filings.
What to watch next
Watch for FINRA updates on the Explorer’s coverage and features, and for any additions to its market-data or company-profile content. Traders can also compare its displayed information with primary issuer filings and real-time data available through their trading platform.
