FCA Issues Guidance for UK's New Cryptoasset Regime
The Financial Conduct Authority has published guidance on how the UK’s future cryptoasset regime applies to firms. The regulator said the material is intended to help businesses establish whether their activities require FCA authorisation before the new regime takes effect on 25 October 2027.
The guidance covers issuing qualifying stablecoins, operating cryptoasset trading platforms, dealing and arranging deals, safeguarding cryptoassets, and arranging cryptoasset staking. The FCA said the authorisation gateway will open on 30 September 2026 and that it is offering pre-application support and webinars for firms preparing to apply.
The FCA also plans an October consultation on targeted updates to the perimeter guidance. It said that work will cover matters including qualifying stablecoins, proprietary trading and market making, technology providers, decentralised protocols, safeguarding arrangements involving central securities depositories, and financial promotions.
Why it matters
For traders using UK-facing crypto platforms, the guidance is an early marker of the activities the FCA expects to sit within its future perimeter. Platform operators and intermediaries now have a published reference point for assessing whether they need authorisation and how their business model may be affected before applications open.
The announcement does not itself change a retail trader’s account terms or grant a firm approval. It sets out the regulator’s preparation path ahead of the new regime.
What to watch next
Watch for the 30 September authorisation-gateway opening and the FCA’s October consultation. Firms operating trading venues, providing custody, or supporting proprietary trading and market making may need to review the consultation’s proposed perimeter updates closely.
