CFTC Grants More Than $150 Million in Whistleblower Awards
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission announced that it granted 10 final whistleblower award determinations totaling more than $150 million between July and September 2026. The agency said the awards recognized people who supplied original information that helped the CFTC and other authorities bring successful enforcement actions.
The CFTC does not identify the underlying enforcement matters or disclose exact award amounts when doing so could reveal a whistleblower’s identity. It said eligible whistleblowers may receive 10% to 30% of monetary sanctions collected, subject to the program’s statutory and regulatory criteria.
The awards are paid from the CFTC Customer Protection Fund, which the agency said is funded by monetary sanctions paid by Commodity Exchange Act violators rather than by money withheld from harmed customers. The CFTC said that, since its first award in 2014, its awards have exceeded $580 million and are associated with enforcement actions resulting in more than $5.1 billion in monetary sanctions.
Why it matters
For futures, derivatives, and commodities-market participants, the announcement shows the scale of the CFTC’s incentive program for original information about suspected misconduct. Whistleblower information can complement regulatory surveillance where customer-fund misuse, deceptive solicitations, or manipulation may not be apparent from public prices alone.
The awards do not identify new trading requirements or establish that every tip leads to an award. Eligibility and award levels remain case-specific.
