ESMA Says Market Resilience Masks Risks of Abrupt Corrections

The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) has published its second 2026 risk-monitoring report, warning that the resilience of EU financial markets is masking important vulnerabilities. The regulator pointed to stretched technology valuations, heightened geopolitical tension, persistent inflation, and weaker economic growth as factors testing market resilience.

ESMA said strong performance in technology and AI-related sectors has supported a rapid return of investor optimism after volatility. But it warned that the gap between upbeat valuations and weakening macro-financial conditions increases the chance of a sudden correction if sentiment changes or economic risks materialise.

The report also highlights risks across securities, crypto-assets, market infrastructure and retail participation. ESMA noted that equity markets recovered after the Middle East conflict, while sovereign yields rose and credit spreads widened. It said cyber and operational risks are becoming more important as frontier AI changes the risk landscape, and that digital platforms and gamification can encourage impulsive investment decisions.

Why it matters

For active traders, the report is a reminder that a market recovery does not remove event risk. Sharp moves can be amplified when positioning, elevated valuations and changing macro expectations collide. Traders using leveraged products should keep margin, stop-loss and liquidity assumptions under review, particularly around geopolitical or inflation-sensitive events.

What to watch next

Watch forthcoming inflation, growth and sovereign-debt data alongside developments in energy markets and geopolitical headlines. ESMA’s full report also examines prediction markets, technology IPOs and links between crypto-assets and the wider financial system.
