SEC Investor Advisory Committee to Discuss AI and Reg NMS

The Securities and Exchange Commission’s Investor Advisory Committee will hold a public meeting on Sept. 10 to discuss artificial intelligence technologies in the public markets and the SEC’s Regulation National Market System rules.

The SEC said the meeting will begin at 10 a.m. ET at its Washington headquarters and will also be webcast on SEC.gov. The agenda includes two panels: one on AI technologies and the public markets information ecosystem, and one on Regulation NMS.

The item is not a rule proposal by itself. It is still relevant for active traders because both topics sit close to market plumbing: how investors and firms consume market information, how automated tools shape decision-making, and whether the current equity-market framework still fits faster, more automated trading workflows.

Why it matters

AI tools are already being used for research, screening, coding, order workflow support, and market commentary. A public SEC advisory discussion can help show which investor-protection and market-data issues are gaining regulatory attention before they become formal rulemaking or guidance.

The Reg NMS panel also matters because changes to national market system rules can affect routing, quoting, market data, best execution analysis, and venue competition. Traders may not interact with those rules directly, but they shape the execution environment behind retail and professional platforms.

What to watch next

Watch whether the committee develops recommendations after the Sept. 10 meeting, especially around AI-generated market information, retail-investor disclosures, market-data access, or updates to equity-market structure rules. Any formal SEC follow-up would likely come through staff guidance, additional roundtables, or a later rule proposal.
