Standard Chartered has launched institutional Bitcoin and Ether spot trading in the UAE through its Dubai International Financial Centre branch, becoming the first Global Systemically Important Bank to offer this service in the region. The branch operates under the Dubai Financial Services Authority.

Eligible institutional clients can now trade BTC/USD and ETH/USD through Standard Chartered’s existing electronic trading channels, using the same FX interfaces they already use for traditional currency pairs. Settlement can be handled through a custodian of the client’s choice, including Standard Chartered’s own digital asset custody solution, which has been operational since September 2024.

The UAE rollout extends a service the bank first launched through its UK branch in July 2025. It fits into a broader digital asset strategy that includes custody, tokenization, and ventures such as Zodia Markets and Libeara.

Why it matters

A G-SIB offering regulated crypto spot trading through traditional banking infrastructure lowers the barrier for institutional capital to enter digital assets. For traders, it signals that the gap between crypto-native venues and traditional finance is closing — especially in jurisdictions like the DIFC that have built dedicated regulatory frameworks for digital assets. More institutional flow through regulated channels can improve liquidity and reduce counterparty risk in BTC and ETH markets.

What to watch next

Whether other global banks follow with similar launches in the UAE or other regulated hubs like Singapore and Hong Kong. Standard Chartered’s integration of crypto execution alongside FX could become a model for how traditional brokers eventually offer crypto to their existing client base.
