IEX Options Files Activity-Based Risk Control Changes

Updated: Fresh

Investors Exchange filed an immediately effective rule change with the Securities and Exchange Commission to adjust activity-based risk controls for IEX Options members.

The August 25 Federal Register notice says the exchange filed SR-IEX-2026-27 on August 13. The proposal amends IEX Rule 22.250 and makes conforming changes to Rule 22.260. IEX Options is still a new venue, approved by the SEC in September 2025, so these risk-control details matter for firms preparing routing and quoting systems around the exchange.

The filing adds an option for members to set a Priority Customer Multiplier between 0% and 100% for the trade counter used by activity-based risk controls. A lower multiplier gives less weight to trades against priority customer orders when testing whether a control has been breached.

IEX also says risk controls may be adjusted during the trading day, not only before the session begins. When an activity-based control is breached, the exchange would cancel and block orders and quotes in the affected options class from that member.

Why it matters

Options traders and brokers rely on exchange-level controls to contain quote, order, and execution exposure. Intraday adjustment flexibility can help firms respond to volatility, while automatic cancel-and-block treatment changes the operational consequences of a breach.
