CFTC Sets First Innovation Advisory Committee Meeting for August 20
CFTC Chairman Michael S. Selig announced that the agency’s Innovation Advisory Committee will hold its inaugural meeting at 1 p.m. Eastern time on August 20 in Washington.
The CFTC said the committee was created to advise the Commission on issues at the intersection of technology, law, policy and finance. The agency described the group as a council of innovators, entrepreneurs, thinkers and builders that can provide recommendations as regulation tries to keep pace with developments in finance.
The meeting will be livestreamed on CFTC.gov. The agency also published dial-in details and identified Michael Passalacqua as the advisory committee’s designated federal officer for additional questions.
Why it matters
The CFTC regulates derivatives markets, including futures, swaps and designated contract markets. Technology-driven products such as event contracts, digital-asset derivatives and around-the-clock trading models are increasingly part of the trader-facing product mix.
An advisory committee does not change rules by itself. Still, its agenda and recommendations can show where the Commission may focus future policy work, guidance or market-structure reviews. Traders should watch for signals on how the regulator views innovation that crosses traditional boundaries between exchanges, brokers, data providers and clearing infrastructure.
What to watch next
Watch the August 20 meeting materials, livestream and any post-meeting recommendations. The most important trader-facing signals will be references to event contracts, digital assets, automated markets, market resilience or changes to exchange oversight.
