ESMA Authorises EuroCTP for EU Shares and ETF Consolidated Tape

Updated: Fresh

The European Securities and Markets Authority has authorised EuroCTP B.V. to operate the EU consolidated tape provider for shares and exchange-traded funds. The authorisation covers a core piece of MiFIR market-data infrastructure: a single stream of pre-trade and post-trade equity and ETF data from multiple contributors.

ESMA said EuroCTP has a transition period until 30 September 2026 to finalise operational and technical arrangements before the service starts. Once live, EuroCTP will operate the tape for five years under ESMA’s direct supervision, with the five-year period beginning when operations start.

The regulator said retail investors, academics, civil society organisations and regulators will be able to use the data free of charge. Other users will have access for a reasonable fee and may use the data internally and with clients.

For traders, the practical issue is transparency. Fragmented equity and ETF trading across venues makes it harder to compare activity and execution conditions. A working tape should make EU market data easier to monitor, especially for investors who currently rely on broker or vendor feeds that may not show the whole market.

Why it matters

Execution quality, venue choice and liquidity analysis all depend on reliable market data. A consolidated tape will not replace broker best-execution checks, but it can give traders and compliance teams a broader reference point for European shares and ETFs.

What to watch next

Watch whether EuroCTP is ready by the 30 September 2026 transition deadline and how quickly brokers, data vendors and trading platforms begin exposing the tape to end users.
