ESMA Publishes First FASTER Market-Capitalisation Data
The European Securities and Markets Authority published its first annual set of market-capitalisation figures and market-capitalisation ratios for EU Member States under the FASTER Directive.
The release covers reference years 2024 and 2025. ESMA said the publication is the first implementation of its FASTER mandate, under which it developed technical standards for the calculation methodology and must publish annual market-capitalisation data for Member States.
The figures matter because countries whose market size exceeds 1.5% of total EU market capitalisation for four consecutive years become subject to specific requirements related to withholding-tax relief. ESMA published the core market-capitalisation figures and a raw-data annex alongside the news release.
Although the item is not a broker product launch, it is a market-structure data point for EU securities markets. The data set creates a common official reference for which Member States cross the FASTER threshold and how market size is measured across the bloc.
Why it matters
For brokers, custodians and cross-border investors, withholding-tax relief processes can affect settlement, dividend handling and the net return clients see from EU-listed securities. A standard ESMA data set gives firms a clearer reference point for which national markets may face added FASTER requirements.
What to watch next
