Expert Advisor (EA)

An Expert Advisor (EA) is an automated trading program designed for the MetaTrader platform. EAs can monitor markets, analyze charts, generate trading signals, and execute trades — all without you pressing a button. They're written in MQL4 (for MT4) or MQL5 (for MT5) and run directly within the trading platform.

EAs range from dead simple to extraordinarily complex. A basic EA might buy when the 50-period moving average crosses above the 200-period moving average and sell when it crosses below. Advanced EAs incorporate multiple strategies, adaptive parameters, risk management rules, and sometimes machine learning elements. The MQL community and third-party vendors sell thousands of EAs, with prices from free to several thousand dollars.

The biggest misconception about EAs is that they're a passive income machine. Most EAs work well in specific market conditions and fail in others. Overfitted EAs show spectacular backtest results but fall apart in live trading. If you use EAs, treat them as tools that require monitoring and occasional adjustment, not as "set and forget" money printers.
