Forex Market Hours 2026: When to Trade

April 3, 2026

Forex trades 24 hours a day, five days a week. That's the headline. But treating all 24 hours equally is a mistake that costs real money — through wider spreads, lower liquidity, and unpredictable price action. This is your practical reference for 2026 market hours, including the DST shifts that catch people off guard every spring and fall.

2026 Session Times (UTC)

Session Standard Time (UTC) DST Active (UTC) Key Pairs
Sydney 21:00 – 06:00 22:00 – 07:00 AUD/USD, NZD/USD
Tokyo 00:00 – 09:00 00:00 – 09:00 USD/JPY, EUR/JPY, AUD/JPY
London 08:00 – 17:00 07:00 – 16:00 EUR/USD, GBP/USD, EUR/GBP
New York 13:00 – 22:00 12:00 – 21:00 USD/CAD, EUR/USD, GBP/USD

Note: Japan doesn't observe daylight saving time, so the Tokyo session stays fixed. Australia's DST runs October–April (opposite to Northern Hemisphere).

2026 DST Transition Dates

  • US clocks spring forward: March 8, 2026
  • UK/EU clocks spring forward: March 29, 2026
  • Australia clocks fall back: April 5, 2026
  • Australia clocks spring forward: October 4, 2026
  • UK/EU clocks fall back: October 25, 2026
  • US clocks fall back: November 1, 2026

Between March 8 and March 29, the US is on DST but the UK isn't yet — the London-New York overlap is one hour longer during this window. These mismatches happen twice a year and affect session overlaps in ways your trading platform won't warn you about.

The Money Hours: Session Overlaps

London–New York (13:00–17:00 UTC standard)

This is the single most important trading window. Over 50% of daily forex volume occurs during these four hours. EUR/USD spreads drop to their lowest, trend moves are strongest, and major US economic data (released at 13:30 UTC) creates the day's biggest volatility. If you only have time for one trading session, this is the one.

Tokyo–London (08:00–09:00 UTC standard)

A short but sometimes sharp overlap. European traders react to Asian session developments, and crosses like EUR/JPY and GBP/JPY often see their first directional moves of the day. Worth watching if you trade yen crosses.

Sydney–Tokyo (00:00–06:00 UTC)

The calmest overlap. Decent for AUD, NZD, and JPY pairs but generally lacks the momentum for aggressive strategies. Range trading works better here than trend following.

When to Stay Away

  • Sunday open (22:00 UTC): Gaps from weekend news, wide spreads, thin liquidity. Wait at least an hour.
  • Friday after 20:00 UTC: Traders closing positions, erratic moves, widening spreads.
  • Holiday weeks: Christmas (Dec 24-Jan 1), US Thanksgiving, Japanese Golden Week, Chinese New Year. Volume drops 30-60% and price action becomes unreliable.
  • 30 minutes before major news: Spreads widen as market makers reduce exposure. Unless you're specifically trading the event, stay out.

Key Market Holidays in 2026

Best Hours by Trading Style

  • Scalpers: London-New York overlap. Tightest spreads, enough volatility for quick entries and exits.
  • Day traders: London open through New York overlap (08:00-17:00 UTC). This is where trends form and complete.
  • Swing traders: Session timing matters less. Focus on avoiding entries at low-liquidity extremes.
  • News traders: 13:30 UTC for US data, 12:45 UTC for ECB, variable for BOJ/BOE. Have positions set or be ready — moves happen in seconds.
