What Is Copy Trading?

Copy trading allows you to automatically replicate the trades of other traders in real time. When the trader you follow opens a position, the same trade opens in your account proportionally. When they close, yours closes too. It's a way to participate in the markets without making every trading decision yourself.

eToro pioneered this approach with CopyTrader, which lets you browse trader profiles, see their track records, and allocate a portion of your funds to copy them. Other brokers offer similar features through built-in platforms or third-party integrations.

How Copy Trading Works

You choose a trader (or "strategy provider") based on their performance history, risk profile, and trading style. You allocate an amount to copy them, and the system mirrors their trades proportionally. If a trader risks 2% of their portfolio on a trade and you're copying with $1,000, you'd risk $20 on that trade.

Most platforms let you set stop-loss limits to cap potential losses, and you can stop copying at any time. You retain full control over your funds — the copy feature just automates the trade execution.

What to Look for in a Copy Trading Broker

A large pool of verified strategy providers with audited track records. Transparent performance statistics (not just cherry-picked gains). Risk scores and maximum drawdown data. Flexible allocation — the ability to copy multiple traders and adjust proportions. Low minimum copy amounts so you can diversify across strategies.

Common Copy Trading Mistakes

The biggest mistake is copying traders based solely on recent returns. A strategy that gained 80% last month might be taking outsized risks — one bad week could wipe out those gains and more. Always look at maximum drawdown, the length of the track record (at least 6-12 months), and the risk score assigned by the platform. Consistent 15-25% annual returns with a 10% maximum drawdown is far better than a flashy 200% return with 60% drawdowns.

Putting all your copy trading funds behind a single strategy provider is another error. Diversifying across 3-5 traders with different strategies (trend following, range trading, news-based) and different instruments (forex, indices, commodities) spreads your risk. If one trader hits a losing streak, the others can offset the damage.

Copy Trading vs PAMM Accounts

Copy trading and PAMM (Percentage Allocation Management Module) accounts both let you follow other traders, but they work differently. With copy trading, trades are replicated in your account and you maintain full control — you can stop copying, close individual trades, or adjust allocation at any time. PAMM accounts pool your funds with the manager's and other investors'; you get a proportional share of profits but can't intervene in individual trades.

For most retail traders, copy trading offers more flexibility and transparency. You can see every trade in real time, set your own stop-loss limits, and withdraw at any point. PAMM accounts suit investors who prefer a fully hands-off approach and are comfortable locking funds for a defined period. Both options are available at several brokers on this list.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make money with copy trading?

It depends on the traders you copy and your risk management. Past performance doesn't guarantee future results. Diversify across multiple strategy providers and set stop-loss limits to manage risk.

Which broker has the best copy trading?

eToro is widely considered the leader in social and copy trading, with CopyTrader and a 30M+ user community. OCTA also offers built-in copy trading through OctaTrader. For MT4/MT5 users, MQL5 Signals provides another option.

Is copy trading suitable for beginners?

Yes, copy trading is often recommended for beginners as a way to participate in markets while learning. Just don't rely on it entirely — use it alongside your own education to understand why trades are being made.

What's the minimum amount needed for copy trading?

Minimums vary by broker. eToro requires $200 minimum per copied trader. Some brokers allow copy trading from as little as $50. Check each broker's specific requirements.
